The Huawei Nova 5T (codenamed Yale ) remains a popular mid-range device due to its Kirin 980 chipset and premium build. However, Huawei’s post-2019 decision to cease bootloader unlocking codes renders conventional custom ROM installation nearly impossible. This paper investigates the current landscape of custom ROM development for the Nova 5T, analyzing unofficial unlocking methods (e.g., paid services, exploit-based unlocking), available ROMs (GSI vs. device-specific), and the stability, security, and functional trade-offs. Findings indicate that while Generic System Images (GSIs) can boot, full functionality is rarely achieved, and unofficial unlocking introduces significant security risks.
