Upon moving into the Victorian mansion, the family encounters a cast of eccentric and terrifying characters, including the mysterious next-door neighbor, Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange), and the disfigured former occupant, Larry Harvey (Denis O'Hare). As the season progresses, the family discovers that anyone who dies on the property becomes trapped there as a ghost. The house becomes a purgatory filled with spirits ranging from serial killers to innocent victims, all of whom have their own agendas for the new residents.
