The "Makkal Selvan" delivers a masterclass in subtle acting. His character, Kaathadi, isn’t a hero. He sleeps on a torn mattress, gets beaten up by loan sharks, and struggles to even buy a new shirt. Sethupathi makes you root for a "loser" without making him a caricature.
However, the film subverts expectations. There is no instant attraction. Instead, the first half of the film is driven by Yazhini’s prejudice against Kathir’s lifestyle and Kathir’s indifference toward her. The narrative meticulously details the friction caused by their proximity—noise complaints, shady visitors, and the stark contrast between Kathir’s rugged, chaotic world and Yazhini’s aspiration for a polished, orderly life.
