The story follows Dr. Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton), a rational, single, and content British academic specializing in narratology (the study of stories). While attending a conference in Istanbul, she purchases an old antique bottle. While cleaning it, she accidentally releases a powerful Djinn (Idris Elba).
