Uchimura was introduced to gymnastics at the age of 5 and quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the sport. She began training at a local gymnastics club in Fukuoka and rapidly progressed through the ranks, winning numerous regional and national competitions. In 2007, Uchimura joined the Japanese national gymnastics team and made her international debut at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
