The human-animal bond has existed for thousands of years, evolving from utilitarian relationships to deep emotional connections. Today, over half of global households own at least one pet. However, the concepts of "pet care" and "animal welfare" are often discussed separately. Pet care focuses on the domestic responsibility of an owner toward a companion animal, while animal welfare encompasses the ethical treatment of all animals (wild, farm, and domestic). This paper argues that responsible pet care is the foundational pillar of global animal welfare , and that neglecting one undermines the other.
